Tsurugaoka Hachimanguu 鶴岡八幡宮
“Tsurugaoka Hachimangu” [鶴岡八幡宮/つるおかはちまんぐう] is the famous “Hachiman Shrine”(Shrine of the God of War) located in Kamakura city.
HISTORY
“Tsurugaoka Hachimangu” was established by Japanse samurai Minamoto Yoriyoshi (988-1075) in 1063.
He is the founder of Kamakura era, and dedicated to Hachiman, the Shinto god of war who served as the clan deity of the Minamoto family.
“Tsurugaoka Hachimangu” has became a spiritual sources for samurai.
Nowadays, it is known as the central facility in Kamakura, and many tourists are visit this place.
DESCRIPTION
“Tsurugaoka Hachimangu” is one of the famous touring spot in Kamakura city.
Also known as the spiritual spot, that bring you success in life and safe delivery.
At the spring season, Kamakura festival are held and you can see the “Yabusame” (horseback archery) contests.
GUIDANCE
1. “Dankazura”
The road from Kamakura station to “Tsurugaoka Hachimangu” is called “Dankazura”.
There are many cherry trees both sides of the road, so you can see the full broom cherry trees in spring.
2. “Maidono”
“Maidono” is located in the center of “Tsurugaoka Hachimangu”.
It was constructed in 1193, and there are many events held at “Maidono”.
In January, “Chonahajime”(a ceremony for carpenters before work commences) is held, and in May, “Shoubu festival”(Iris festival) is held, and in June and December 31th, “Oharae” (great purification) are held, and in July, “Tanabata festival” (Star Festival) is held.
3. “Hongu”
This is the main sanctuary. Worshippers make a money offering and play.
